Established in 1810 and still a family-owned business, Collen has offices in Dublin, Germany and Sweden and employs 360 people. The company’s clients range from large multinational corporations and private companies to local authorities and state bodies.
Collen is accredited to ISO 45001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001 and, in 2021, achieved ISO 27001:2017 accreditation for its information security management system.
During this past year, Collen set up a new committee system focusing on critical areas. These include mental health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, training and development, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. The goal is to drive positive change throughout the company.
Collen Managing Director Tommy Drumm explains: “We have taken a proactive approach by bringing in specialists in their field to train our board and our senior management team in these areas and drive change from the top down.”
Collen is currently working on several major commercial projects, including The Haymarket in Smithfield and Two South County in Leopardstown. It was recently awarded the contracts for two new landmark developments in Dublin, including The Sidings, a LEED Platinum office development for Bartra Capital and the Premier Inn hotel and offices for Glenveagh.
Since 2017, the company has had a strong presence in Blackrock, Co Dublin, completing the refurbishment of Blackrock Shopping Centre in 2021. Collen’s teams in the south Dublin suburb are currently continuing works on the construction of 45 apartments over Frascati Shopping Centre and a phase-three extension to Fern Dean nursing home. Collen also completed phases one and two of the development.
Collen’s dedicated BioPharma division delivered a new purification suite for a confidential pharmaceutical client in 2020 and more recently completed a 10,000m2 CSA fit-out for WuXi Biologics in Dundalk at their new European headquarters. Collen has also been carrying out significant infrastructure upgrade works at Dublin and Cork airports, involving the installation of a new baggage handling system for both airports, and the construction of a new building at Dublin airport.
In 2020, Collen successfully delivered two design and build hyperscale data centres in Dublin for a confidential client. The company currently has 124MW of data halls under construction in Ireland, Germany and Sweden. It recently opened its data centre Centre of Excellence – a new technologically advanced data centre hub at its head office in Dublin – that supports its national and international data centre projects.
Collen Overview and Outlook
Commenting on the company’s activities over the past 12 months, Tommy Drumm says: “The construction industry saw a positive increase in activity levels in the second quarter of 2021, as remaining non-essential construction sites reopened. While our Irish turnover dropped last year as several of our projects closed for long periods, fortunately, our ongoing European operations, which didn’t slow down, have made us more resilient as a business. This year, we secured several major contracts across commercial and data centre sectors, which leaves us with a strong order book and firmly positioned for the remainder of 2021 and all of 2022,” Tommy Drumm concludes.
